There is a heightened awareness of discrimination in the workplace, and people are more informed than ever about what counts as harassment, exploitation or discrimination. Every workplace faces a risk of becoming a place where such behavior occurs, because employers simply cannot control the actions of all of their employees. However, when these instances do occur, it can be extremely detrimental to the company in question because it is costly, diminishes morale, and can generate negative publicity which can damage the business’ reputation. Create strict guidelines that everyone is aware of
There should be a zero tolerance policy when it comes to discrimination in the workplace. This policy should be written up as a company document and given to all new employees. It must also be readily accessible for all employees to be able to read at any time. Most importantly, it should also be implemented and acted upon whenever it is necessary. There is no reason to have such a document if every employee knows that it is not taken seriously.
Invest in training for managers
All managers should be engaged in training that is related to discrimination, so that they are aware of the ways in which discrimination can manifest itself and how to spot different types of discriminatory behavior.
Create a respectful culture
Creating a collective culture of respect and no-tolerance can mean that discrimination will never occur in the first place.
